Nothing feels better in the winter than a warm, cozy bed. But winter bedding often needs some special care to keep it soft and snuggly. With a little care and preparation, winter bedding will be as fresh as a spring morning even though it may be brought out after months of storage.

The best place to store winter bedding is in the living area of the house because it is climate controlled, unlike the basement, where the bedding could end up with mildew. The storage space should be clean, dry, airy and without direct sunlight. Lidded plastic storage bins should be used to protect material from dust, insects, and rodents. Vacuum-seal bags are a great option, if there is lack of storage space.

Winter bedding must be given a proper cleaning before being put away. Most household washers and dryers aren’t adequately sized to accommodate bulky winter bedding like a queen-size comforter or a twin bed sized duvet. For less strain on home appliances and better and faster cleaning results, one must head to a laundry.
Commercial-grade washers and dryers can handle up to 75 pounds of laundry. A mild detergent should be used to preserve and extend the life of bedding. White sheets should be laundered separately to keep the whites as white as possible. Oxygenated bleach should be used instead of chlorine bleach which can be extremely harsh, and leave a residue that can be damaging to the material.

Cleaning Down comforters
Contrary to popular belief, most down comforters and pillows can be washed, however one must be sure to read the care instructions and use a mild detergent. Some clean tennis balls can be put in the dryer to help fluff the down and keep it from clumping. To keep down pillows and comforters looking and smelling their best, they must be washed regularly.

Using Fabric Softeners
Some textiles, such as down comforters, have a tendency to absorb liquid fabric softener unevenly so use a fabric-softening sheet in the dryer instead. Fabric-softening sheets leave a thin film on the exterior of textiles that prevents static electricity. It also makes the material feel softer.

Cleaning Flannel Sheets
One must wash and dry flannel sheets separately, as they are likely to deposit lint on other items. They should never be over dried because that can cause wrinkles to set and colors to fade. In fact, the best way to dry flannel sheets is to hang them outside to air dry.

Woolen Bedding needs special care
Woolen comforters should be hung up in the sunlight. Sunlight is a natural sanitizer. Sunning and airing freshen up woolen bedding and keep it from smelling like the attic or storage closet all winter long. The woolen comforter will smell like the beautiful outdoors after just a few hours in the sun. Wool bedding may be dry cleaned or hand washed. Generally, it should be dry cleaned only if it has become musty or too dusty to beat or air out, else it can be hand- washed at home.

Woolen comforters should always be air dried in a hanging or flat position. It will bunch if dried in the dryer, resulting in hard lumps and uneven stuffing. Woolen bedding should be stored in air-tight, plastic bags that will not let dust or fungal spores in. This will help limit the amount of work to be done next year when the bedding is pulled out of storage again.
