Feng shui is the ancient Chinese science that comprises of principles that govern spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to patterns of yin and yang and the flow of energy. The proponents of this art believe that feng shui can effect one’s mental and physical wellbeing, prosperity, happiness and fortune. The literal meaning of ’Feng Shui’ is wind and water, which are two fundamental forms of life energy.
Feng Shui uses positive ‘chi’ to improve an individual’s good luck and success. ‘Chi’ is the energy that connects people with their environment. It is the circulating life energy that is inherent in all things. Sheng Chi; positive ‘chi’ is said to bring luck, happiness and prosperity.
The concept of Yin and Yang is integral to Feng Shui. Yin is the dark negative feminine principle and yang is the bright positive masculine principle in Chinese dualistic cosmology. Yin and yang together produce everything that comes into existence. The interaction of yin and yang maintain the harmony of the universe. According to Feng Shui we need to balance the yin and yang in each room of our home.
For instance if a person spends too much time in a room that is painted with dark colors, is cold and has very little sunlight in it then too much yin and stagnant ‘chi’ shall make him feel ill and depressed. On the other hand a person who spends too much time in a room that is painted with light colors and is very bright and warm too much yang ‘chi’ shall make him feel ill and depleted of all energy. Feng Shui can create ambiance and harmony in the bedroom as well.
Placement of the bed:
The head of the bed should not face north. The bed should be placed in a manner such that there is sufficient space on either side of the bed to place a small table or a low cupboard unit. Taller furniture items should be placed to the left of the bed and low tables should be on the right. The area at the foot of the bed should be clear to promote clarity of vision and inspiration.
The bed should be placed in a location that gives clear sight of the door. It should be supported by a solid wall behind it. There shouldn’t be any beams or overhead cupboards directly above the bed. One shouldn’t sleep with their feet facing a door as it leads to outflow of energy. The area under the bed should not be used for storage.
Bedding materials:
Feng Shui recommends beds made of natural material such as solid wood instead of metal ones. Similarly natural bedding materials such as cotton, bamboo, wool etc should be used. Good quality mattress and high quality sheets made up of natural fibers should be used. Water beds should be avoided, as per Feng Shui because they create conflict between the Fire and the Water elements, thus creating instability while we sleep.
Bedroom colors:
Soothing colors should be used to create a positive balance in the room. Loud and overpowering colours should be avoided. Violets, lavender, yellows, blues, whites and grays can contribute towards making the bedroom soothing and restful. Sharp angles and geometric shapes should also be avoided. Skin colors ranging from pale white to chocolate brown are preferred.
Bedroom Furnishings; Mirrors, pictures and lighting:
Mirrors should not be placed directly opposite the bed. Round mirrors should be used because they signify
unity. Soft lamps Hades that create a subdued and calming atmosphere in the room should be used. Candles are also good lighting option. They create positive energy in the room. Sad, lonely or violent imagery should not be used in the bedroom. Pictures should depict pairs in the master bedroom to create balance. Pictures depicting one’s dreams and goals are also a good idea. Furniture with rounded edges should be used and sharp edges should be covered with fabrics. Dominating furniture should not be kept in the bedroom.
Doors and windows:
Doors and windows should not be situated directly opposite each other. The bed should not be placed next to the window. Octagonal or arched windows are ideal for the bedroom. The windows should be opened often to purify the air of the room. At night all closet, bathroom doors should be closed.
Electronic equipment:
Television, computer or exercise equipment should be kept out of the bedroom. If keeping these things in the bedroom is a must, they must be covered when they are not being used.
All kinds of clutter, things associated with bad memories and broken down objects should be removed from the bedroom since they eat into the positive energy. Following Feng Shui tips shall result in a harmonious and balanced bedroom.
