Fill Power: Fill power is a measure of how many cubic inches one ounce of down fills. It is the volume occupied by the filling and it varies depending on the quality. Higher fill power means that the comforter will be fluffier and warmer.

Firmness: Firmness refers to the amount of resistance that a mattress offers when a weight is placed on it. The more a mattress resists compression the firmer it is.

Fitted Sheet: A fitted sheet refers to the bottom sheet that covers the mattress of the bed. There are three kinds of fitted bed sheets. The first kind has an elastic edge all along the perimeter of sheet.. The second kind has elastic along the sides, and the third kind has elastic only at the corners.

Flat Sheet: A flat sheet is also called a top sheet. It goes over the fitted sheet. One sleeps between the two sheets; under the flat sheet and over the fitted sheet.

Flannel: Flannel is a soft woven cloth. It may be a blend of cotton, wool or synthetic fabrics. Flannel sheets are quite warm making them ideal for use in winters.

Futon: A futon comprises of a mattress placed on wood or metal frames that can be used as a bed as well as a couch.

Jacquard: It is a weaving technique in which intricate patterns and designs are woven directly into the fabric.

Percale: It is a fabric type that features plain closely woven weave. It is smooth, firm and of medium weight. It is often used in luxury bedding items.

Pillow Sham: A fancy pillow cover that has decorative ruffles and tassels.

Pillow Cover: A pillow cover is a protective covering that protects the pillow from body oils and soiling.

Pima Cotton: Pima cotton is long-staple cotton. Also known as extra long staple, it is grown in the southwestern regions of the United States, Australia and Peru. Pima cotton sheets have a soft and silky finish.

Quilt: A quilt is a kind of bed cover that is consists of a top fabric, a batting and a backing fabric.

Sateen: Sateen is a kind of weave. Sateen sheets are made of natural fibers and are not as expensive as satin sheets.

Satin: Satin is a polished synthetic fabric; usually nylon. Although it is often used in luxury bedding, it is not as strong as silk. It is also more difficult to clean

SuPima Cotton: It is an abbreviation for “Superior Pima” and is a trademark for cent percent pima cotton grown in the US.”

Thread Count: Thread count refers to the number of threads woven into a square inch of fabric. Higher thread count sheets have a tighter weave which makes the surface smooth and luxurious to touch

Ticking: Ticking refers to a strong fabric used for covering the layers in mattresses and pillows on the outside. It may be in plain twill or sateen weave.

A bedspread is a decorative covering for the top of the bed. It comes on top of the flat sheet. It may or may not come all the way to the floor or fold over the pillows. A finely crafted bedspread can give a finished decorative touch even to a sparse bedroom.

A bedspread may be printed or woven. Cotton, polyester and silk are the most preferred fabrics when it comes to bedspreads. There was a time when all bed sheets were white cotton. But now sheets are available in different colors, styles, patterns and textures. Many retailers customize the sheets to suit individual tastes. Before buying bed sheets the size of the bed that needs new sheets has to be determined. Sheets are available in twin, full (or double), queen, king and California king sizes. It is a good idea to measure the length and width of the bed to ensure that the bed sheets fit correctly.

The most important things that should be considered when buying sheets are fabric, thread count and the type of weave.

Fabric
Egyptian cotton is the best fabric for sheets. Grown exclusively in the Nile River Valley, it is one of the world’s strongest and helpful cotton. The combination of Egyptian cotton fabric and a high thread count results in the most luxurious sheets.

Pima cotton is long-staple cotton. Also known as extra long staple, it is grown in the southwestern regions of the United States, Australia and Peru. These sheets are known for their soft and silky finish. Then, there are sheets made from “Supima” cotton. It is an abbreviation for “Superior Pima” and is a trademark for cent percent pima cotton grown in the US.”

Muslin cotton is coarse cotton. Muslin is not very smooth and durable. Fading and pilling with subsequent washes is also common. However it is printed with colorful character patterns and used in kid’s bedding.
Flannel is a soft woven cloth. It may be a blend of cotton, wool or synthetic fabrics. Flannel sheets are quite warm making them ideal for use in winters. Their quality is measured in ounces per square yard. Generally, 4 oz. or more is considered good quality.

Silk is a fine and strong natural fiber. It blends easily with cotton, linen and rayon. Silk sheets may demand special care and maintenance, but they are so luxurious and soft that sleeping on silk is worth the effort needed in maintaining them.

Satin is  a polished synthetic fabric; usually nylon. Although it is often used in luxury bedding, it is not as strong as silk. It is also more difficult to clean. Sateen bed sheets are different from satin sheets. The former are also smooth and lustrous, however, “Sateen” is a kind of weave, while “satin” is a kind of material. Sateen sheets are made of natural fibers and are not as expensive as satin sheets.

Thread Count
The thread count is the number of horizontal and vertical threads in a square inch of a bed sheet’s fabric. A higher thread count means a tighter, softer and more durable sheet. It also makes sheets more expensive. One should purchase something with a thread count of at least 200 to make the sheets last for a while. Sheets with a thread count of 300 to 400 are very nice while remaining quite affordable. Some sheet sets have a thread count of 1000 or more. Although these are uber luxurious they demand extra care and may not be so durable.

Weave
Two types of weaves are usually used in sheet sets; percale or sateen. A percale weave is closely woven with no gloss, which gives percale sheets a smooth texture. A sateen weave has more yarns on the surface of the fabric. This makes a sheet more lustrous and gives it the look of satin. Other kinds of weaves are pinpoint, twill and jacquard. Pinpoint weave is more durable than a regular weave, but it is not as soft as sateen. Pinpoint sheets soften with repeated washings. Twill sheets have diagonal lines on one side of the fabric. These sheets hold their shape and are wrinkle resistant. Jacquard is a very complex weave. Though difficult to create, these sheets look amazing.
