Vastu shastra is an old Indian science of architecture. Sometimes called ‘Ancient Wisdom of Architectonics’, vastu comprises rules for construction and layout of towns, villages, cities, buildings, houses, flats, shops, factories etc. Vastu is said to bring success, mental peace, happiness, health and prosperity to those living in spaces that have been build as per its rules. It brings harmony among the positive and negative forces that are constantly interacting with each other on the surface of the land. Vastu lays down several rules when it comes to the bedroom.

Location
The master bedroom or the bedroom of the head of the family should be located in the southwest of the home, since south is considered to be the cool place. If this is not possible then a ‘Kuber Yantra’ or a ‘Vastu yantra’ should be placed there to remove the vastu defects. In cases where there is more than one floor, the head of the family should have his bed room in south-west direction on first floor. This bedroom should not be used by young children otherwise it may result in unnecessary quarrels. A west sided bedroom is good for children. An eastern bedroom can also be used for children. Teenage girls should have their bedrooms in north-west direction.
The bedroom should not be constructed in the central portion of the house or in the basement or above the porch or the kitchen. An attached bathroom can be in north-west or south-east of bedroom.
Placement of the Bed:
Vastu recommends the use of good quality wooden beds. Metal beds should be avoided. The beds should be placed towards the southwest of the room but never in the southwest corner. One should sleep with head towards the south for sound sleep and better health. The foot of the bed should be facing north and should not face the door. The bed should not obstruct the door of the room. Bed should be kept at a distance of 2-3 inches from the wall. The bed should not be kept under a beam or in the corner.
Modern vastu permits usage of box beds with the condition that the storage space should be kept clean and clutter free and metals and utensils should not be stored in it.
Cabinet:
Cabinets and/or wardrobes should be placed in south-west of the room opening towards North. It should be placed in south or west directions of the room.
Television and Electrical Appliances:
Ideally television should not be kept in the bedroom. However if it is a must it should be kept in the south east of the bedroom. Other electrical appliances should be kept in south-east of the room.
Doors and Windows:
The door of bedroom should be in the East or the North. Windows should also be in the East and North of the room.
color scheme:
Vastu recommends light colors. The color of bedroom should be light rose, pink, blue, yellow and green for they encourage intelligent thinking. Yellow and white colored marble stones should not be used in the bedroom. Black and red color should be avoided in the bedroom.
Lighting:
As per vastu lighting is an essential part of bedroom. The lighting should be a soothing general illumination. The lighting should not be too bright or too dim. An up-lighter should be kept in south-east.
Pictures/ Paintings:
Pictures of war, cruelty, sadness, lonely birds or wild animals, statues of gods and goddesses, fish tanks should not be kept in the bedroom.
Mirrors:
Most people prefer keeping dressers in their bedrooms. However, the mirror should not be placed directly in front of the bed or in a position where it can reflect one’s reflection while sleeping.
Generally, south-west corner of bedroom should not be left empty. Heavy things such as furniture should be kept in this portion. Moreover, south-west side of the house and of all rooms inside the house should always be heavier than the East and north-east side. Maximum open space should be left in north-east side of the room and house.
